Poundcake is not your average cover band. Poundcake is Teddy Thompson (guitar/lead vocals), Jeff Hill (stand-up bass/backing vocals), and Ethan Eubanks (drums/backing vocals) in what could be one of the funniest comedy acts you’ve ever seen. But they are also a group of the best musicians you’ll ever see.
The hilarity started early with Hill showing us a plastic bag he was carrying in his pocket because he’s catsitting and plastic bags are essential when you’re catsitting. He didn’t have anything else to say about it, so the plastic bag became a running joke between Thompson and Eubanks and they continued to tease Hill about his non-starter of a story. Eubanks carries on with the funniest asides and the best is when he cracks Thompson up so much that Thompson can’t get through a song.
Thompson’s voice can go from pop to country to R&B easily as the band makes it way through the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, and Ray Charles tracks. And then there are the guest stars. Each guitarist was a star making the brilliant songs shine brighter with his solo. All the guitarists took a turn during “Maybelline” with each one trying to outdo the other.
